There was just a TON of great stuff released, much of which I poured over indecisively. One theory is that this is the time that many albums &#8211; presumably recorded while in a 2020 quarantine &#8211; are finally seeing the light of day. It does after all, take quite some time for a proper physical record to be manufactured. Wild theories aside, here are the albums I was most thankful to have graced my ears.<\/p>\n<h2>22. KMRU &amp; Aho Ssan &#8211; Limen [ Multiverse Media Publishing ]<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: AMBIENT \/ DARK AMBIENT \/ DRONE ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/limen_kmru_aho_ssan_lima.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"><\/center><br \/>\nA sprawling ambient album of seething bass lines and distorted textures. True to the cover art the music is like an electric lavastorm passing by, violent in its approach but perhaps more benevolent in its actual effects.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=1100746110\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/kmruahossan.bandcamp.com\/album\/limen\">Limen by KMRU &amp; Aho Ssan<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>21. Givre &#8211; Destin Messianique [ Eisenwald ]<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: ORTHODOX BLACK METAL \/ GOTHIC ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/givre_destin_messianique.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"><\/center><br \/>\nThere was A LOT of black metal released in 2022 and going through everything that seemed interesting on first glance was a challenge. A lot of it was competent but very generic. Yet Givre is a whole different beast. Conceptually seated in orthodox French catholicism, the band really brings a very different angle in both ideas and musical styles.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=3119811349\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/givremetal.bandcamp.com\/album\/destin-messianique\">Destin Messianique by GIVRE<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>20. Derniere Volonte &#8211; Cristale [ Tesco Organisation ]<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: SYNTH-POP \/ COLD WAVE ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/derniere_volonte_cristal.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll be honest I hold Derniere Volonte to a much higher standard than most other artists because of the incredible level of quality of the project\u2019s previous works. Maybe that\u2019s unfair, but this is an \u201caverage\u201d album from the project that still blows 95% of synth-pop out of the water. Wistful, dark, glassy, and nostalgic are just a few of the beautiful emotions captured perfectly in Cristal.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=1267651296\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tescogermany.bandcamp.com\/album\/cristal\">CRISTAL by DERNIERE VOLONTE<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>19. King Dude &#8211; Death [ V\u00e1n ]<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: DEATH ROCK \/ GOTHIC ROCK \/ POST-PUNK ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/king_dude_death.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Gone are the slower ballads that swept King Dude into the neofolk genre. What\u2019s left are the gothic rock leanings years in the making. Ascending &#8211; Istintiva Bellezza [ Detriti Records ]<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: SYNTH-POP \/ COLD WAVE ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/ascending_istintiva_bellezza.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Italian synth-pop with attitude. Lisieux &#8211; Abide! [ Throatruiner Records ]<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: NEOFOLK \/ POST-ROCK \/ PROTO-GOTH ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/lisieux_abide.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"><\/center><\/p>\n<p>This band has a unique take on neofolk blending in goth and post-rock while paying special attention to detail and production. Hussar &#8211; All-Consuming Hunger [ I-Voidhanger Records ]<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: BLACKENED DEATH METAL ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/hussar_all-consuming_hunger.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Howling unholy blackened death metal with not one dull moment. Mostly aggressive but with an air of atmosphere that cannot be denied. Burial Hex &#8211; Gauze [ Cold Spring Records ]<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: INDUSTRIAL \/ DARKWAVE \/ EXPERIMENTAL ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/burial_hex_gauze.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Burial Hex returns with his unique mix of industrial, noise, classical and darkwave. Dead Man\u2019s Hill [ Black Mara ]<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: RITUAL INDUSTRIAL \/ DARK AMBIENT ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/dead_mans_hill_the_sacrifice.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve always kind of thought Dead Man\u2019s Hill was a bit underrated but they\u2019ve really outdone themselves with The Sacrifice delivering a heavy slab of seething, throbbing, dark cinematic soundscapes.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=3581915290\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blackmara.bandcamp.com\/album\/the-sacrifice\">The Sacrifice by Dead Man&#39;s Hill<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>13. Tempers &#8211; New Meaning [ Dias Records ]<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: SYNTH-POP \/ COLD WAVE \/ POST-PUNK ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/tempers_new_meaning.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"><\/center><\/p>\n<p>New Meaning has a sheen of beauty and melancholy blended with beautifully rendered melodies and rhythms to create a record that endures many listens.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=2348589441\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tempers.bandcamp.com\/album\/new-meaning\">New Meaning by TEMPERS<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>12. Incantvm &#8211; Strigae [ I-Voidhanger Records ]<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: BLACK METAL \/ CLASSICAL \/ AVANT GARDE ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/incantvm_strigae.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Really incredible mix of classical and black metal. The classical elements are of a more unique Eastern European flavor here which contribute to a much more original sound than the description might suggest.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=2441579074\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i-voidhangerrecords.bandcamp.com\/album\/strigae\">Strigae by INCANTVM<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>11. Generacion Suicida &#8211; Regeneraci\u00f3n [ Self-Released ]<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: PUNK \/ POST-PUNK \/ GOTH ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/generacion_suicida_regeneracion.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"><\/center><br \/>\nGreat record of catchy gothic influenced post-punk anthems with lyrics sung in Spanish.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=4080265280\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/generacionsuicida.bandcamp.com\/album\/regeneracion\">REGENERACION by Generacion Suicida<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>10. Bad Manor &#8211; The Haunting [ Ordo Vampyr Orientis ]<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: LO-FI BLACK METAL ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/bad_manor_the_haunting.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Lo-fi black metal was all the rage this year but I found The Haunting to be the most absolute original and engaging work that came out of the genre. Being a production snob I generally turn up my nose at most lo-fi efforts but Bad Manor manages to capture the appropriate rough qualities of the technique while maintaining an air of filthy heaviness that should be contained in such a recording. In addition, the fascinating concept and unique vocal delivery really makes The Haunting something special. This album is like an Edward Gorey illustration come to life.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=2396682243\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ordovampyrorientis.com\/album\/the-haunting\">THE HAUNTING by BAD MANOR<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>9. Emma Ruth Rundle &#8211; EG2: Dowsing Voice [ Sargent House ]<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: AVANT GARDE \/ RITUAL \/ PSYCHEDELIC ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/err_dowsing_voice.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"><\/center><\/p>\n<p>ERR made headway in the folk and rock scene as a blossoming new talented artist which propelled her to a solid reputation. However EG2: Dowsing Voice sees the artist taking a sharp left hand turn to more unexplored territory of haunting ambient chants, trance-inducing experimental atmospheres, and psychedelic passageways that are completely unprecedented by her previous work. I\u2019m not sure what inspired this record but I have surely enjoyed reaping the benefits.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=1366157240\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emmaruthrundle.bandcamp.com\/album\/eg2-dowsing-voice\">EG2: Dowsing Voice by Emma Ruth Rundle<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>8. Control &#8211; Torment [ Cloister Recordings ]<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: DEATH INDUSTRIAL \/ POWER ELECTRONICS \/ NOISE ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/control_torment.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Quickly following his 2021 release with yet another full-length Control differentiates Torment from its predecessor by foregoing vocals and delving into darker territory. It\u2019s not exactly more minimal but it is more creeping and slower paced. Just as layered as previous material but more dynamic and atmospheric Torment is exactly what I needed to hear many times throughout 2022.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=4175789020\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cloisterrecordingsus.bandcamp.com\/album\/torment\">Torment by Control<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>7. Boy Harsher &#8211; The Runner [ Dias Records ]<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: SYNTH-POP \/ COLD WAVE \/ FILM SCORE ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/boy_harsher_the_runner.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"><\/center><\/p>\n<p>During covid Boy Harsher created a short film in which they intertwined material from their upcoming album &#8211; as the score and content of the film &#8211; with a simple and violent narrative of supernatural events. The Runner is the title of the film and the album that acts as a score. Combining cinematic interludes with throbbing dance hits the duo expands with collaborations on several tracks that opens the palette of their sound perfectly.<\/p>\n<h2>6. Diaf &#8211; Gloria [ Young and Cold Records ]<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: SYNTH-POP \/ POST-PUNK \/ STADIUM ROCK ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/diaf_gloria.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Illustrious German synth-pop artist Diaf returns with a sophomore full-length featuring his token fervent vocals and energetic pulsating dance anthems. It\u2019s dark but humorous, serious but fun, urgent and uplifting to a fault.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=3984401760\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/diaf.bandcamp.com\/album\/gloria\">GLORIA by DIAF<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>5. Human Larvae &#8211; Pure Sex [ Freak Animal Records ]<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: INDUSTRIAL \/ POWER ELECTRONICS \/ NOISE ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/human_larvae_pure_sex.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Sticking to the script Human Larvae delivers another dynamic full-length of harrowing industrial noise that is both rough and refined. Taking us through dark valleys and over crumbling peaks Pure Sex is an exercise in depraved isolation and frustration.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=638042612\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/humanlarvae.bandcamp.com\/album\/pure-sex\">Pure Sex by Human Larvae<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>4. Dune Messiah &#8211; Privileged [ Self-Released ]<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: NEOFOLK \/ POST-PUNK \/ ADULT CONTEMPORARY ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/dune_messiah_privileged.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Dune Messiah has clearly matured from his 2019 album Moments of Bliss. Featured here is a healthy dose of saxophone, trumpet and lyrics grappling with easing into middle age, dealing with political correctness, and past loves lost. The songs are catchy and uplifting but always with an air of irony and wistfulness that demonstrates Dune Messiah\u2019s self awareness.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=3810492764\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dunemessiah.bandcamp.com\/album\/privileged\">Privileged by Dune Messiah<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>3. Lunacy &#8211; Echo In The Memory [ DedStrange ]<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: INDUSTRIAL \/ COLD WAVE \/ POWER ELECTRONICS ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/lunacy_echo_in_the_memory.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"><\/center><\/p>\n<p>An artist that is new to me, Lunacy has a minimal synth sound combining elements of industrial, cold wave, and power electronics to create dizzying works that hypnotize and intrigue.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=1113916502\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lunacy.bandcamp.com\/album\/echo-in-the-memory-lp\">Echo In The Memory LP by LUNACY<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>2.
