Lo-fi black metal cemented it&#8217;s rise as did dungeon synth as well as a breakthrough of dark folk into more mainstream channels. While wars rage in the world our collective soul is hurting and perhaps the most salient sign of this is the ferocity and force of the music we are creating. So here it is: my top albums of 2023 ALL GENRES, IN ORDER.<\/p>\n<h2>23. Morwan &#8211; Svitaye, Palaye<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: COLDWAVE \/ POST-PUNK ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/23-morwan-svitaye.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/center><br \/>\nMorwan have such a unique sound combining a very dancy rhythmic coldwave feel but also a heavy dose of atmosphere. Coldwave can feel very formulaic rhythmically but the band\u2019s style is almost progressive, however they manage to retain a strict dark atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=375544282\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/morwan.bandcamp.com\/album\/svitaye-palaye\">Svitaye, Palaye by Morwan<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>22. Fragile Body &#8211; Unwell<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: POST-INDUSTRIAL \/ DARKWAVE ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/22-Fragile-Body-Unwell.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/center><br \/>\nThe debut album from this new project and what a great effort it is. Fragile Body draws the listener into her carefully crafted atmospheres that evoke a deep inner world lush with mysterious layers in which to peel back on each consecutive listen.<br \/>\n<iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=3230100004\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/annihilvspowerelectronix.bandcamp.com\/album\/unwell\">UNWELL by FRAGILE BODY<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>21. Necrofier &#8211; Burning Shadows in the Southern Night<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: BLACKENED DEATH METAL ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/21-necrofier-burning-shadows.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/center><br \/>\nNecrofier traverses death metal, black metal, and even some thrash and crust elements with ease. With \u201cBurning Shadows\u2026\u201d they\u2019ve crafted a masterwork of creative riffage and well intentioned song writing to keep you coming back for repeated listens.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=2581232290\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/necrofier.bandcamp.com\/album\/burning-shadows-in-the-southern-night\">Burning Shadows in the Southern Night by Necrofier<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>20. Far From Remains &#8211; The Mountainside Breeze<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: ETHEREAL \/ NEOFOLK ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/20-far-from-remains-the-mountainside-breeze.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/center><br \/>\nFar From Remains manages to capture a stunning vista of foggy ethereal folk, choral arrangements and echoing ephemera. Listening to \u201cThe Mountainside Breeze\u201d is a great way to quickly transport yourself to the peak of an epic mountain surrounded only by clouds.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=2841958215\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/savo-karelianproductions.bandcamp.com\/album\/the-mountainside-breeze\">The Mountainside Breeze by Far From Remains<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>19. P\u00e4\u00e4kallo &#8211; P\u00e4\u00e4kallo<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: PSYCH ROCK \/ POST-PUNK ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/19-Paakallo-Paakallo.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/center><br \/>\nThe Finnish language sounds so musical to me and so I\u2019ve always had a soft spot for artists that write in it. P\u00e4\u00e4kallo is no exception and in addition to very solid song writing they manage to create a cinematic sound through their composition and production. This one certainly got spun a lot this year.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=3647884756\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/paakallo.bandcamp.com\/album\/p-kallo\">P\u00e4\u00e4kallo by P\u00e4\u00e4kallo<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>18. The Infinity Ring &#8211; Nemesis &amp; Nativity<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: DARK ROCK ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/18-the-infinity-ring-nemesis-and-nativity.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/center>I struggle to file The Infinity Ring under a certain genre because they are precariously balanced somewhere between dark folk, or gothic rock but don\u2019t necessarily fit into either of those. The most obvious reference point is The Great Annihilator-era Swans which in itself is such a unique and gutsy place to be; and yet The Infinity Ring glooms there with ease.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=1477634007\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/theinfinityring.bandcamp.com\/album\/nemesis-nativity\">Nemesis &amp; Nativity by THE INFINITY RING<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>17. Crooked Mouth &#8211; Between The Fool and the Magician<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: NEOFOLK \/ WYRD FOLK ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/17-crooked-mouth-between-the-fool.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/center>With \u201cBetween The Fool and the Magician\u201d Crooked Mouth has reached the next level of production and songwriting, perfectly adding their own spin to the traditional European neofolk sound.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=179491121\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/crookedmouthcampbell.bandcamp.com\/album\/between-the-fool-the-magician\">Between The Fool &amp; The Magician by Crooked Mouth<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>16. Blood of the Black Owl &#8211; Spirit Canoe: Soaring the Shadow Spiral<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: DARK AMBIENT \/ DOOM \/ TRIBAL ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/16-BOTBO-spirit-canoe.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/center>\u201cSpirit Canoe\u2026\u201d is wholly more atmospheric than BotBO\u2019s previous works but the specter of their doom metal past is still there. What you will find in abundance though is beautifully crafted atmospheres evoking the deep mossy green rainforests of the Pacific Northwest and the indigenous peoples who originate from there.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=2622433778\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/glassthroatrecordings.bandcamp.com\/album\/spirit-canoe-soaring-the-shadow-spiral\">Spirit Canoe: Soaring the Shadow Spiral by Blood of the Black Owl<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>15. David Eugene Edwards &#8211; Hyacinth<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: DARK FOLK \/ NEOFOLK ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/15-david-eugene-edwards-hyacinth.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/center>\u201cHyacinth\u201d sees David Eugene Edward\u2019s unwavering spiritual visions manifesting in 11 beautifully rendered dark folk songs. Like a lone wolf howling in the night each effort, a unique sound in its own rite but somehow perfectly attuned to the nature surrounding it.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=2851267511\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/davideugeneedwards.bandcamp.com\/album\/hyacinth\">Hyacinth by David Eugene Edwards<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>14. Hasard &#8211; Malivore<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: ATMOSPHERIC BLACK METAL ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/14-hasard-malivore.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/center>Absolutely mind bending black metal from France. I\u2019m not sure if \u201cMalivore\u201d is atonal music or not but there it certainly feels like there is a lot of reaching between the notes. The sum of the parts creates this obsessive pallid fog that seems to permeate even the most impenetrable corners of the mood.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=2826434340\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/leschantsduhasard.bandcamp.com\/album\/hasard-malivore\">Hasard &#8211; Malivore by Les chants du hasard<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>13. Thragedium &#8211; Lisboa Depois de Morta<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: METAL \/ NEOFOLK ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/13-thragdium-Lisboa-Depois-de-Morta.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/center>Upon first listen of \u201cLisboa Depois de Morta\u201d I almost couldn\u2019t believe what I was hearing. Perhaps the most original and adept mixing of folk and metal since Agollach. But Thragedium is not derivative, they are clearly on their own path here and what a wonderful and wandering one it is.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=209949488\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/almamater.bandcamp.com\/album\/lisboa-depois-de-morta\">Lisboa Depois de Morta by Thragedium<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>12. Lankum &#8211; False Lankum<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: FOLK \/ EXPERIMENTAL ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/12-lankum-false-lankum.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/center>This album seems to have appeared on a lot of lists and it\u2019s no surprise. Lankum\u2019s interpretation of classic folk songs push the envelope to the next level. Ranging from clanging industrial dirges to sleepy lullabies. The things they all have in common is an impeccable air of atmosphere, creativity and musicianship.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=2951683544\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lankum.bandcamp.com\/album\/false-lankum\">False Lankum by Lankum<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>11. Rome &#8211; Gates of Europe<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: NEOFOLK \/ ROCK ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/11-rome-gates-of-europe.png\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/center><br \/>\nWhat happens when neofolk becomes stadium-rock friendly? I think we can safely answer that question now with Rome\u2019s latest offering \u201cGates of Europe\u201d. It\u2019s neofolk with a rock-friendly feel. Like a dark Bruce Springsteen, Jerome Retuer combines larger-than-life 80s style synths with softened acoustic guitars to create a tactfully rendered effort that sounds just a small step away from a radio hit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fantotal.de\/en\/ltd-12-vinyl-rome-gates-of-europe\">Purchase the vinyl here<\/a><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HAW3h4stekI?si=bHxIlqshhAu9N3qM\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>10. Sulphur Aeon &#8211; Seven Crowns and Seven Seals<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: MELODIC DEATH METAL ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/17-sulphur-aeon-seven-crowns.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/center>I enjoyed Sulphur Aeon&#8217;s &#8220;Seven Crowns and Seven Seals&#8221; the first time I heard it but it really snapped into place on second listen. I can&#8217;t help but feel there&#8217;s some 90s grunge influence lurking somewhere behind this epic wall of crusty death\/sludge\/doom riffs but if so, it remains shrouded in darkness. Truly impressed with the great heights to which this album reaches.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=1120768059\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sulphuraeon-vanrecords.bandcamp.com\/album\/seven-crowns-and-seven-seals\">Seven Crowns and Seven Seals by Sulphur Aeon<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>9. Yellow Eyes &#8211; Master\u2019s Murmur<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: DUNGEON SYNTH \/ INDUSTRIAL \/ BLACK METAL ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/09-Yellow-Eyes-Masters-Murmur.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/center>Yellow Eye\u2019s \u201cMaster\u2019s Murmer\u201d is so strikingly original it took multiple listens just for me to get my head around. With each listen I seemed to remember it as a different thing. Once a dungeon synth album, then a black metal album\u2026 or was it a noise album? That sounds like I\u2019m saying it was forgettable yet it\u2019s anything but that. More like perplexing and entrancing.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=1862365584\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/yelloweyes.bandcamp.com\/album\/masters-murmur\">Master&#8217;s Murmur by Yellow Eyes<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>8. Nighttime &#8211; Keeper is the Heart<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: INDIE FOLK \/ DARK FOLKE ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/08-Nighttime-Keeper-is-the-Heart.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/center>Nighttime seems to have followed a similar trajectory as that of one of my other favorite neofolk acts Of The Wand And The Moon in that there was a noticeable shift from a pure dark folk aesthetic to one that more recalls a late 60s\/early 70s folk vibe. Keeper is the Heart is just as playful as it is somber with impeccably rendered production and instrumentation. Layered on top is Eva Louise Goodman\u2019s unforgettable vocal delivery which seems to wrap itself around my soul like a warm blanket on a cold winter day.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=3315336774\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nighttimes.bandcamp.com\/album\/keeper-is-the-heart\">Keeper is the Heart by Nighttime<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>7. Moral Order &#8211; Backlash<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: INDUSTRIAL \/ POWER ELECTRONICS ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/07-Moral-Order-Backlash.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/center>Absolutely flawless delivery of noisy rhythmic industrial from this project that has made themselves a household name in recent years. Larger than life production drives home the heaviest sounds elements while also retaining a dark edge sharper than a razor blade.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=1330591167\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/moralorder.bandcamp.com\/album\/backlash\">BACKLASH by MORAL ORDER<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>6. Trobar de Morte &#8211; Carpe Noctem<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: PAGAN FOLK \/ DARK FOLK ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/06-Trobar-de-Morte-Carpe-Noctem.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/center>Due to the success of bands like Wardruna and Heilung pagan folk has blown up across the world but also with that popularity it\u2019s become quite the trope. From TikTok cringe to carefully curated instagram accounts the genre has become quite tired. Thankfully Trobar de Morte rises above those sad imitators to deliver an incredibly cinematic take on the genre with more elements leaning toward medieval instrumentation and composition. The result is a sweeping and expansive work that encapsulates their unwavering vision of satanic medieval folk that calls to the deep.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=467086267\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/trobardemorte.bandcamp.com\/album\/carpe-noctem\">Carpe Noctem by Trobar de Morte<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>5. Kinit Her &#8211; The Nature Out There<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: NEOFOLK \/ WYRD FOLK ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/05-Kinit-Her-The-Nature-Out-There.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/center>Full disclosure: I contributed a few accordion layers to this album but my participation ended there so I don\u2019t really feel like I have any skin in the game here. With their final album Kinit Her culminates in a masterwork of experimental folk tunes that are unparalleled. They are a band that simply can\u2019t be mistaken no matter where or how they are heard. But where Lankum gets into sleepy lullaby territory \u00d8XN keeps things more brooding and melancholy. Matriarchy Roots &#8211; The Merge<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: INDUSTRIAL \/ TECHNO ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/03-Matriarchy-Roots-The-Merge.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/center>There\u2019s so few great artists in this specific genre that when I find an album that checks all the boxes I really REALLY love it. Matriarchy Roots is the prolific musician Dimitris Doukas also of Restive Plaggona &#8211; his more techno-centric pseudonym &#8211; but the artist\u2019s exploration with the former project seems to fit the bill perfectly where atmosphere, aggression, and minimalism are concerned. \u201cThe Merge\u201d is a throbbing, seething, journey through dimly lit passages in the dead of night.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=3563590160\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/matriarchyroots.bandcamp.com\/album\/the-merge\">The Merge by Matriarchy Roots<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>2. Sutek Hexen &amp; Funerary Call &#8211; P.R.I.S.M.<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: DARK AMBIENT \/ INDUSTRIAL ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/02-Sutek-Hexen-Funerary-Call-P.R.I.S.M.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/center>These two dark ambient heavyweights collide to create one of the most sinister albums of the year. The noisiness of Sutek Hexen tempered by Funerary Call\u2019s sleight of hand creates a true masterwork of mammoth proportions. At The Altar of the Horned God &#8211; Heart of Silence<\/h2>\n<h3>[ FILE UNDER: POST-INDUSTRIAL \/ BLACK METAL ]<\/h3>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/existest.org\/ee_v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/01-at-the-altar-of-the-horned-god-heart-of-silence.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/center>Never would I have thought to hear an integration of the sound of Dead Can Dance with black metal but here we are in 2023 and what an incredible year it was for music. Not only is this unholy union executed with commitment but also with complete sincerity and flawlessness. I was driving when I first heard this album in full and by the time \u201cGod Is In The Rain\u201d hit the tears started flowing at the sheer ecstasy of AtAOtHG\u2019s sound. This is an album that will hopefully create an unholy matrimony between two genres that will flourish together.
