David Payne began building his Fossils empire back in 2004. Since that time Fossils has colonized the underground circuit with a steady flow of ultra-limited tapes\/cdrs, many of them through David&#8217;s own Middle James Co imprint. The Fossils sound is always one of formless despair. Churning low-grade electronics, primitive tape manipulations, and an aura of stoned reverie are all genuine signatures. His work exploits the unique sonic and physical qualities of cassette tapes and tape players\u2026 gritty amplified hiss, the squeal and hum of taxed motors, plastic clatter, and play speed altered by pressure from fingers applied to the tapes&#8217; reels. He runs the Intransitive Recordings label, which has published CDs by artists like Failing Lights, Nerve Net Noise, Lionel Marchetti, Jason Lescalleet, Lethe, and many more. Stelzer&#8217;s first cookbook Beer Cocktails (co-authored with his wife, Ashley) will be published in Spring 2012 by the Harvard Common Press. Formed around home made gear and meandering guitars MK has been described as &#8220;sounding like a airplane crashing into a mountain in slow motion&#8221;. While primarily a noise project, MK has also created installations, performed in galleries and once, played a show in a field for an audience of two horses, a pony and a goat. MK has a forth coming tape (eventually) coming out on the Sacred Phrases label. <\/p>\n<p>Middle Kingdom&#8217;s live sounds are culled from a homemade synth, a guitar and a pile of assorted homemade junk.
