+Dog+/Actuary – Concordia Dischord 7″

Love Earth Music

This is a split seven inch between two acts, the prolific +Dog+ and I’m guessing what might be a new project Actuary. Each artists presents one track per side, probably around 5 minutes or so each. The artwork falls on the better side of what Love Earth Music has created in the past with ink line drawings of devils stabbing people and-so-on and-so-forth.

+Dog+ is up first with Specific Ocean which is a glitchy noise piece that sounds like a bit of a step back from his more recent material. The sound is lo-fi and crunchy while it sounds like his gear is breaking. The noise here becomes weaker and weaker as the track goes on. It’s a simple one-layer affair with little else going on and too little to hold my interest.

Actuary goes another route with Sight for the Blind, a track that is full of converging sounds and fucking around with free-jazz drums (a cymbal most prominantly) in the background. It seems like it’s noise for noise’ sake on the menu tonight and although it is chaotic and rather noisy it’s just not cutting it for me tonight. Sure, it’s ok for what it is but I’ve heard a thousand records like this already and most of them were done with more tact and precision.

I hate to see that one of the better packaged releases from this label is weaker on the auditory side, but I have to report that this is the case. The artwork left me expecting a bit more this time but this is as generic as it gets.
