Budrūs – Devyniems Rytams Auštant CD

Self Released

Here’s a heavy disc of black ambient from an unknown project to me. I have no idea where Budrūs hails from but I wouldn’t be surprised if they reside in deep dark woods, or some foggy isolated lofty mountaintop somewhere based on the earthly drones emanating from Devyniems Rytams Auštant. They merge harmonic synthesized beds with various black metal influenced vocal deliveries and some tribal percussion to form a unique sound.

Sometimes the vocals are screamed and sometimes they are whispered or spoken gruffly. The sounds come from synthesizers half the time, and slowly undulating guitars the other parts of the time with some sparse sound design textures augmenting each track to add just a touch more depth and atmosphere. This is all pretty dark and somber and there are a lot of great and memorable tracks here.

Deep into the disc in the track Draskyti sapna,Atbulom Link Skliauto some noisier textures are explored with distortion and screaming voices yet soaring and melancholy drones are still very prominent. Some of the tracks could easily be compared to Karljalan Sissit but without the outright orchestral elements. The vocals are spoken in the native language which mesh with the sounds very well and keeps the atmosphere heightened. The following track Pjutyie is also worth mentioning with it’s power-drone glistening harmonic beds and recurring rhythmic elements. When the oddly affected vocals are thrown on top it just brings the track to the next level and really hits right where it seems Budrūs is aiming for.

This is a great album and I would recommend to anyone into the more atmospheric side of black metal or into the darker and more harmonic side of drone. There are some great power-drone tracks and unique combinations of sounds and styles with solid composition and a consistent atmosphere Budrūs has created a very strong effort with Devyniems Rytams Auštant.
