Lethal Dose 50 – 21st Century Awakening CD

Nuit et Brouillard

Here’s an album that was released way back in 2006. Not sure why it was sent to me for review now but I’m trying not to refuse anything. 21st Century Awakening is an album that spans industrial, ambient, electro and synth pop and unfortunately it’s spread a little thin for my taste.

The tracks where LD50 stays committed to one style are decent, like Dose V.S.291 and Solitude. But when LD50 strays into electronica territory it tends to ruin the mood too much because it isn’t done well and it doesn’t really fit with the atmosphere. Pureness is a pretty bad track that is minimalist and underwhelming with it’s boring beats and strangely uplifting melodies. 21st Century Awakening is a good track up until the lame beats appears towards the end.

The only time where the electro style is done with any tact is in Anti-Dose IX.s.265 but it’s still too little too late. Some of the other tracks here are ok but as an album this just doesn’t work for me. The textures and gestures are just so similar and are rather dry once I am really expecting to be getting to the heart of the album.

It’s too bad because this could be a solid album of dark and experimental music but instead it comes off as being half that and half a dumping ground for trial tracks by the artist.
