Vasculae – Cultural Primitivism CD
Vasculae is a side project of Jon Borges also the man behind the label releasing the disc as well as Pedestrian Deposit and Emeciator among other projects. Cultural Primitivism lays down three hefty tracks in around 50 minutes of no-holds-barred harsh noise with a small amount of experimental atmospheres.
One thing that is interesting is that the quality of the noise is much different from his other projects. It has a very crunchy and up-front sound. There is not much experimentation with space, pacing, and composition like Pedestrian Deposit. There are some passages here that break down into interludes but mostly the cascades of distortion are focused into an unrelenting wall of noise.
By the time track three entitled Dying of the Light rolls around there is some attention paid to evolving the track. It starts off with sputtering lo-fi noise for about the first 5 minutes until it finally explodes into a blast of reverberating washes of harsh sound. The changes in this track are much more frequent and recall the style of an audio collage more than a strait up harsh noise track.
Cultural Primitivism is one for the harsh heads through and through. Long walls of seething distortion, odd and awkward breakdowns, and various angular textures will see any masochist through the worst of times.
