Peter J. Woods – Failure from Both Ends 7″
Peter J. Woods the insane professor from Milwaukee, is back. In this quick album he explores different sounds and compositions but nothing that is too unfamiliar to his previous work. However the material sees him furthering his technique and vision.
Side A contains East a track that begins in a very unobtrusive way. I can’t tell if these are broken oscillators or heavily manipulated vocals but the track builds quite effectively until it has overtaken the listening space. The production is very well done here with the utmost clarity and precision which represents the sounds beautifully.
Side B features West and with this track no time is wasted as we are thrown strait into a desparate swirl of seething distortion. Flangered vocals are added to the fray as well as some more experimental tones, so this isn’t 100% power electronics but close. Eventually the experimental layers start winning out with some awkward arpeggios and electronic chirps that come in to end the track.
Certainly this is a great little record to jam at any point. A good representation of Woods’ sound and some thought provoking pieces. The artwork is worth mentioning as well as it looks like most of it is hand drawn but at the same time quite well done which is rare to find these days.
