Greg Kelley – Self-Hate Index CD
Greg Kelley – Self-Hate Index CD
Greg Kelley is a musician who specializes in experimental styles and creates noise by using a trumpet and running his sounds through fx. This release is a few years old now but it is actually his latest full-length album under his own name.
Much of what you will find here is breathing type sounds, quiet, meditative and unpredictable. There are noisier moments like Shearing Husks where the dynamics really start to open up. Some tracks tend to get a little dry with the focus on breathing sounds like the opener Stimulus Check but other tracks like Vessel prove the versatility in Kelley’s sound source creation with bubbling water sounds which make for a great change up just when one is needed.
The album leans more toward the avant-garde/free improvisation style sound but it makes use of the best aspects of those styles and has some very interesting moments. Definitely an enjoyable album that shouldn’t be overlooked especially for fans of out-there music, free jazz and improv type stuff.
