Concern – Living Wage C20

Digitalis LTD

This is a great tape featuring the understated sounds of Gordon Ashworth’s ambient project. If you are unfamiliar with the artist he is also the man behind the harsh noise collage project Oscillating Innards.

Side A features two tracks of blurry melodic frameworks packed into a box, shoved into a corner in the attic and eventually buried under layers of dust. That’s not to say this material isn’t relevant – it is – but it’s oh so delicate and esoteric that it conjures up these kinds of images and emotions. It’s like discovering that box and slowly opening it’s contents, going through each and every one which offers new insight on old forgotten memories. At their core the tracks sound like they use guitar and piano arpeggios but the notes are layered and blurred as to create an ambience rather than “songs”.

Side B is a touch more intense with drones that build into subtle harmonies that are just aching to escape. There is a low intensity which is coupled with the more peaceful tones in the higher spectrum range which adds a weird juxtaposition.

This is a strait-up excellent tape. For minimalist styled drone music it is top-notch material recalling the best work from artists like Grouper and Wardrobe. Look to this tape for an emotional intimate experience that would be perfect to wake up to on a rainy Sunday morning.
